Explain Love to Me

Your hat lifts softly, greets, floats in the wind; your uncovered head has charmed the clouds, your heart has business elsewhere, your mouth takes new languages into itself, quaking grass overruns the land, summer blows star-flowers open and away, blinded by flakes you raise your face, you laugh and weep and perish into yourself — what more can happen to you?

Explain love to me!

The peacock, in solemn wonder, spreads his wheel, the dove lifts its feathered collar, the air, overfilled with cooing, stretches, the drake cries out, wild honey overtakes the whole land, and even in the ordered park every bed is rimmed with golden dust.

The fish blushes, overtakes the shoal and plunges through grottoes into the coral bed. To the music of silver sand the shy scorpion dances. The beetle scents the loveliest one from far away; if only I had its sense, I too would feel the wings shimmering beneath her shell, and take the path to the distant strawberry bush!

Explain love to me!

Water knows how to speak, one wave takes another by the hand; in the vineyard the grape swells, bursts and falls. How innocently the snail steps out of its house! One stone knows how to soften another.

Explain love to me — what I cannot explain: should I spend this brief, terrible time keeping company only with thoughts, alone, knowing nothing lovely and doing nothing loving?

Must one think? Will one not be missed?

You say: another spirit is counting on him …

Explain nothing to me.

I see the salamander walk through every fire. No shudder drives him, and nothing causes him pain.
